Homicide #35

The man found lying dead in a yard in the 3700 block of Elliot Ave. is now homicide #35. Details have now been released in the case and it appears that Mark Loesch went for an evening bike ride and ended up getting beaten to within an inch of his life and left to die on someone's lawn. No suspects, no idea about a motive. Even his bike was found nearby.

(Note: I had this listed as homicide 34 which means I missed one or miscounted somewhere. I'll go back later and try to figure out the discrepancy. If anyone else can do it before this afternoon, I'd be grateful if you'd leave a comment and I'll make the appropriate correction.)

That story makes me sick to my stomach. I hope they find the low life(s) and never let them see the sun again.

This reminds me of the time I was biking down Franklin Ave East, and a gang of blacks was crossing the street ahead of me. One of the blacks tried to push me off my bike into the path of an oncoming car, and I narrowly avoided being killed. Violent black racist criminals are out there, and they do this sort of thing to white people because they are racist against whites. This story I tell is not isolated, and I've got many others of similar nature. That part of town is to be avoided, especially at night.

This is why I question living in Mpls anymore. No matter how much the mayor, police, or anyone else says how safe this or that part of the city is, I know that there are violent, hate filled types out there that do these random crimes. What really changed my mind about this city was the trouble at the U of M with students getting almost beaten to death, the uptown murder and other troubles, thse bus stop attacks, and in general just the robberies that seem to always fit the same victim/perpetrator profile.

...oh and I forgot a criminal justice system that just recycles this chaos back into the city over and over, a politically correct city council, and lawsuits that hinder the authorities from cracking down on crime.

Anonymous I don't know what you mean by a politically correct city council. All they care about is making things look pretty a long with our mayor. I have lived here all my life and I am fed up. My taxes will skyrocket again but don't go out at night you may be beat to death. We have to have walkers to keep NE safe. What a bunch of crap.

This is very sudden and unfortunate. The saddest part is he has three little girls and a son, all under the age of 13, now with only a single mother. It has changed the way everyone on my block feels about the neighborhood, and it now hurts my stomach to walk past their house because of this horrific situation. My prayers and condolences go out to the family.

This city is toast. Get out while you can. Believe me, there are much better areas in St. Paul and suburbs to get away from this crap.

Babies having lots of babies that the breeding baby can't afford to raise emotionally nor financially. That's the problem. Betcha. There is something seriously F'ed up in the black culture with regards to reproduction. How many more baby "Destiny"'s need to die before people wake up to this fact?

That could have been me-literaly. I was beaten nearly half to death in my own backyard two years ago by two thugs. They didn't make off with anything, but they followed me all the way to my house, so they were doing it for kicks. People like that not only shouldn't be allowed to live here, they shouldn't be allowed to live, period.

I just want to point out that as far as we know there is no evidence the perps were black or any other race for that matter. That being said this is another sickening story in a city that has been going down the toilet for years. The solutions are obvious to most people (scale back welfare, increase time served dramatically, more cops, etc.) but for reasons I cannot fathom the mentally ill idiots that are running the show here don't seem to want to do anything about it. There's no reason this city can't ever get back to 1950 crime levels. Make it an extremely uncomfortable place to be criminal is all that is required.

Well, you can say that we don't know if the perps were black, but the odds are the criminals are black. According to the Minneapolis Police Department 2006 Homicide Summary, 52% of homicide suspects were black (48% black male, 4% black female), in a city that according to latest census numbers is 17% black. This means that blacks murder at the rate of 3 times other races, and this does not include the 23% where suspects race/gender is unknown. Breaking this down to black male suspects only, and figuring a 50/50 ratio of black males to females, we can calculate that in Minneapolis black males murder at the rate of 5.65 times the rate of the other groups. Again, does not include the 23% where suspects race/gender is unknown, which may push this number up even higher. All you have to do is do the math.

Yes, this random attack on an innocent victim IS sickening. I live on the block where his body was found and we are all in shock. Nobody heard a thing, so we're wondering if he wasn't attacked somewhere else and his body dumped here. Nieghbors on this block are vigilant (have to be considering the area just a block away) so if someone had seen or heard anything, I know they would have done somethig.

But what's just as sickening are the racist comments that are being posted here, one after another.
No, there are no suspects in custody so absolutely nothing at this time to indiate the race of the murderer(s).

Yes, over half of convicted murderers are black, but consider who their victims are...disproportionately, young black men are victims of violence.

Poor black children receive an inferior education through the institutionally racist school system. They project how many prisons to build based on how many children are below proficient on their third grade test scores. Everyone knows there is an achievement gap between white students and students of color, so it's the black students who you know will end up in prison unless we make some fundamental changes in how we educate black children in our society.

You are right to insist that nobody has said anything about the race of the perps. And there is an achievment gap between blacks and whites, especially so in the Minneapolis Public schools. Whether it is racism, culture, economics or something else is debatable. If you want to argue that the Minneapolis Public Schools are racist, go ahead. I'm open to that idea.

Where you lose me is the statement "They project how many prisons to build based on how many children are below proficient on their third grade test scores." For one thing, prison building as an activity has lagged behind the need for prison space. I am not sure who "they" are either. States and the Feds build prisons or contract with privately run prisons. Counties have county jails. I don't buy some mysterious conspiracy that sends poorly educated black kids on a treadmill to the big house.

If kids are poorly educated and lack opportunities, it's not hard to see them turning into scam artists, burglars, shoplifters and petty criminals of other kinds. People who beat other people to death (for no reason-remember NOTHING was stolen from this guy, not even his bike) are psychopaths and sociopaths, not just people who lack jobs and other opportunities.

Equally disturbing as the death of this young woman -
http://www.startribune.com/462/story/1443350.html
is the fact that she is one of 16 children. Is there any wonder why there are so many youth going down the wrong path in the African American community?
