South Minneapolis burglary: stolen, one dissertation

This grabbed me a little more than the run of the mill burglary story since I too, had a laptop stolen with my dissertation on it about a dozen years ago. Fortunately, I had it backed up on another computer in my office. In fact, the closer I got to being done, the more backups I made in more remote locations. I just found one of those backups the other day on a remote server I used to use.

It didn't make me feel any better though since I lost plenty of other stuff that wasn't backed up or that had to be repurchased and reinstalled. I was freaked out and so are these people. I wasn't even home at the time but these people were asleep in bed when a burglar was rumaging through their stuff.

This is precisely the kind of thing that is making some folks in South Minneapolis say we need 50 more cops. These people understand that they were a soft target (they knew their window was faulty) but they didn't make getting it fixed a priority because they thought the were in a safe, crime free area.

Backup, backup, backup. Its not really a back up unless its in 3 different places. Really have to stick to a backup schedule and have a system in place. There is also software that can be installed on a computer that will contact a place on the internet, and if the computer is stolen, it can be traced.

Its a humungous bummer about the dissertation.

Whittier is a safe, crime free area?

Now that's news.
