"Tough Guy" Beats, Maces and Burglarizes 77 Year Old Woman

KSTP has this disturbing story of an elderly Northeast Minneapolis woman who was maced and then struck in the face twice by an intruder who then burglarized her home and fled before police arrived.

According to the story, the unidentified woman was awakened by her dog. The intruder was in her house. He claimed that he had found the elderly woman's purse earlier in the week and let himself in with the key. He then asked the lady for a reward and she told him "I think you better leave".

The man then sprayed the 4'9 85 pound woman repeatedly with mace and then punched her in the face twice. The intruder then ran upstairs and went through her belongings. The elderly woman called her daughter, who called the police.

Police are seeking leads. If you have information related to this case you can call the tip line at (612) 692-8477. Although leads are being sought, no description of the perpetrator was given. No address or even neighborhood was given for the victim.

KSTP refers to the area in NE as an area "that was once considered a safe haven for families." Sadly, I think they have that about right. NE is still safer than a good deal of the south side and definitely safer than North, but it is no longer the low-crime area it once was. As with the burglaries in Kenwood, we are seeing criminals filling a vaccuum. They are opting to go where the pickings are better, easier and the police coverage is light.
