Possible Homicide #6

Even if this turns out to be a homicide, we are still well below last year and below St. Paul which has 7 or 8, I believe, at present. MPD Media Release below

---------------------------
Police investigate suspicious death

June 29, 2009 (MINNEAPOLIS) Shortly before 7 p.m. EMS personnel responded to a medical call in the 5700 block of Bossen Terrace on the southern edge of the Third Precinct. When EMS personnel arrived at the apartment it was apparent that the adult male for whom medical attention had been summoned was deceased and that the death appeared suspicious.

Minneapolis Police personnel responded to the scene and the Minneapolis Police Department’s Homicide Unit is investigating the case. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death and identify the victim.

There are no suspects in custody. The Minneapolis Police are asking that anyone who can provide information about this case contact the TIPS line at 612-692-TIPS (8477).

The PIO contact for this case is Sgt. William Palmer. The CCN is 09-199339.

Suspects Charged in Light Rail muggings

City Pages has the story. Looks like the security cameras helped police ID the suspects. The pattern went public when a Pioneer Press Transit reporter got mugged.

New Burglary Alert and crime prevention tips

Yes, burglary is on the upswing.

MPD Crime Alert below
----------------------

Hello,

We need your help! We are seeing an uptick in Burglaries. Specifically garage burglaries. Many of these involve no force. This means that either doors are left open or unlocked. Bicycles still seem to be the most commonly stolen item from the garages.

We need our Community Partners to get the word out. Let everyone on your block know;

1. Lock your garage doors and make sure they shut completely as you're leaving. Don't be in such a hurry that you drive away while your garage door is shutting. The door sensors may trip and leave your garage open all day.

2. Keep your garage doors locked and shut even when you are home. We have had people working in their front yards be victims of garage burglaries. They leave the garage open after getting gardening tools out and go to the front yard. The opportunist walks through the alley and sees the open garage and in seconds takes a bike.

3. Keep your house doors locked even when working in the yard. Don't leave your front door vulnerable and unlocked while you work in the back yard.

4. Watch for ANY suspicious activity/behavior on your block. If you see ANYTHING suspicious please call 911. Don't be afraid to use 911 to let us know something suspicious is happening on your block. You are our partners, we need you to call.

5. Be a good witness. Get as much description as you can. Observe any physical features of suspicious parties, clothing, vehicles, tattoo's, license plates and any other information that can help us locate or identify the person. I have attached a good form to have handy to make notes on what you saw.

6. Attend or start a neighbor Crime & Safety Committee meeting. Be informed and help keep your neighbors informed.

7. Make sure your motion lights work and that when they go off at night, you or your neighbors pay attention to why they went off.

8. Cut down foliage that is blocking lines of site. We need you to be able to watch out for your neighbors and your neighbors to be able to watch out for you.

9. Stay in contact with your neighbors and welcome anyone who has recently moved in (or those you haven't met yet that have been there for a while).

Remember please:

Please let your block club members know about these events.
Be aware of your surroundings. Call 911 on any suspicious activity, persons, or vehicles.
Watch for people on the street before exiting your home or vehicle.
When you get into your car, lock your doors and do not just sit in the parked vehicle.
Do not carry excessive cash, credit cards, or other items. Bring only what you need.
Write down the numbers and contact information for all your credit/debit cards so you can call and cancel them immediately if they are taken or lost. Keep this information in a safe location.

Crime News Roundup

  • Police shot and wounded a suspect over the weekend in Precinct 3 (See Press Release Below)
  • Crack house fire in North. Johnny Northside has the pictures and details
  • I got added to a series of emails by concerned neighbors in Northeast discussing a resident's home getting burglarized. One of the most frustrating things that happened to her (other than her home getting completely trashed was that she almost immediately became a victim of ID theft. (These guys were pros--they disabled her burglar alarm and broke into her safe). Something that's good to remember in the chaotic aftermath of a burglary is that requesting new cards from your CC companies may not be enough. You should also freeze your credit record to prevent ID thieves from simply opening new accounts in your name. Here is info about how to go about it.
  • Also a heartwarming story came to me via my neighborhood email list. Car thieves were caught thanks to a resident who noticed a strange car full of people parked in a neighbor's driveway. When questioned, the people in the car gave a vague (and unconvincing) answer and shoved off. Long story short--the neighbor got the plates and called it in to 911. It was a stolen car and the perps were apprehended. Who knows what other crime spree was thwarted by the actions of this alert neighbor. Moral of the story, if something looks wrong, call it in. Let the 911 operator decide what priority to give it.

Police shoot and wound armed suspect

June 28, 2009 (MINNEAPOLIS) Just before 3:30 this morning patrol officers in the Third Precinct responded to a shots fired call in the area of Park Avenue South and East 19th Street. Information from 911 about the suspects directed officers into the area of East 14th Street and Park Avenue South. Two suspects were located and officers tried to stop them. One of the suspects immediately complied with officers and was taken into custody without incident. The other suspect, who was armed with a firearm, fled on foot with a uniformed officer chasing him.

A confrontation between the armed suspect and officers took place on East 14th Street between Park and Chicago Avenues. At least one officer fired his service weapon at the armed suspect and that suspect sustained a non-life threatening injury. The officers at the scene were not injured. When the wounded suspect was taken into custody a firearm was recovered. The suspect is currently being treated at HCMC for his injury. A third male suspect who was seen in the area could not be located.

The Minneapolis Police Homicide and Internal Affairs Units will be investigating this case. Several officers who were at the scene will be on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues. These officers will be identified on Monday June 29th.

Anyone with information about the remaining suspect is asked to call the TIPS line at 612-692-TIPS(8477).

There is PIO availability regarding this case until 6:30 a.m. and then after 11 a.m. It is not expected that there will be any further updates on this case today. The CCN is 09-197763.

4th Precinct Weekly Highlights

Shootings, stabbings, drug deals that didn't come off quite as the participants wanted or expected. I don't think that sex offender was properly registered if he was staying at a home with a 12 year old girl.

Armed Robbery in Northrop neighborhoood (SE Mpls)

As much as the MPD has been advertising that serious crime (like homicide) is down this year, it's pretty clear that street crime is still a problem, and robbery, even when associated with assault doesn't always make the news unless it happens to be a reporter as in this light rail station mugging. Police may be looking for a pattern here.

MPD Advisory below

--------------------------
POLICE ADVISORY: Armed robbery in Northrop Neighborhood

Last night (Monday, June 22) about 10:20 p.m., two unknown juveniles robbed a man at knifepoint in an area near the intersection of E. 46th Street and Chicago Avenue in Northrop Neighborhood.

About 10 p.m., the man was cutting through McRae near the tennis courts. The victim said two black males, approximately 15-19 years of age, approached him as he was about to use his cell phone. One of the suspects demanded the victim's phone and punched him several times. The other suspect took the victim's keys and wallet while he was down on the ground. The victim was only able to provide a limited generic description of the suspects.

3rd Precinct patrol officers are particularly on the alert for lurking or loitering people in the area. Residents, please increase your use of good crime prevention techniques and thoroughly read the attached Police Advisory.

Charges filed in Logan Ave N homicide

June 12, 2009 (MINNEAPOLIS) Criminal charges have been filed in the April 28, 2009 shooting death of Kyle James Parker in front of 3418 Logan Ave N. Christopher Dineaa Bahtuoh, AKA “Fat Chris”, (DOB 6/14/1989) has been charged with, MURDER IN THE SECOND DEGREE (intentional) (felony)

According to the complaint, Parker had observed a vehicle, driven by Bahtuoh, driving around the area of 34th and Logan numerous times between the hours of 6:00 and 7:30 p.m. Shortly after 8:00 p.m. Parker was outside his home with the witness when they observed Bahtuoh drive towards them and stop. Parker looked at Bahtuoh and said, “What’s up Fat Chris”. Bahtuoh then pulled away and Parker and the witness continued walking. Bahtuoh drove to the corner, turned around and pulled up to Parker again. Parker told the witness he knew the people in the car and walked towards it as the witness walked up the stairs towards Parkers house. As the witness was on the stairs he heard 2-3 gunshots. The witness turned and observed Parker falling to the ground and Bahtuoh drive away at a high rate of speed. Several witnesses ran to Parker to assist him. As they were helping him they asked him, “Who did this”, Parker replied several times, “It was Fat Chris”. Parker was transported to North Memorial Medical center where he died a short while later.

Homicide detectives Wallerich and Wehr worked the case interviewing numerous witnesses, viewing surveillance video and sorting through information that Bahtuoh was on the move and avoiding the police on a daily basis. Using this information the investigators were able to successfully put together the above charges.

Bahtuoh is being held in custody at the Hennepin County Adult Detention Facility. Bail has been set at $1,000,000. A booking photo is available.

Police Chase through SE/ Downtown

Crimewatch reader emails this:

I ... live a couple blocks away from the Stone Arch Bridge ... Heard sirens and two fast engines tearing down 6th Ave SE towards the steam plant and Stone Arch Bridge, saw a red SUV being chased by a police car and both proceeded at pretty high speeds across the bridge where I'm sure they encountered pedestrians or bikers. Didn't look like anyone was injured on the bridge and that the chase continued once they got to the downtown side. I walk across the bridge all the time and that would have to be a scary scene as a pedestrian or biker.

Home Invasion in Brooklyn Center, Burglaries in Willard Hay

KARE-11 has the story, HT Minnesota Home Invasion blog.

Meanwhile, in my own neck of the woods, reports are coming in fast and furious about a series of kick in the back door type burglaries. It looks like they are coming in looking for something specific, in each case (no assumption here that these are related). In one case they hauled out all the electronics they could lay their hands on and made off with them in a large vehicle (pushed down the fence to get them out)

Suspected Child Luring incident in South Minneapolis

See MPD Press Crime Alert below. The address in the subject line says 57th and Dupont Ave. S. which is in the Kenny neighborhood.

---------------------------------------
On Friday June 5 at approximately 8:00 p.m., a male driving a silver Volvo station wagon attempted to lure a 9 year old female into his vehicle. The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 25 years old, medium build, long brown ponytail with unique facial hair (sideburns which grew into mustache, no chin hair) and wearing glasses with black frames. He was wearing a pink shirt and blue jeans. The child quickly ran to a nearby home. The suspect did not pursue. The vehicle description does not match vehicles involved in other luring incidents in the past months.

Parents-please see the attached documents for safety tips to pass along to your children regarding strangers.

-----------------------------

Attention: Residents of 5th Precinct-Sector 3

In lieu of the recent concerns regarding possible luring, here are some helpful tips that can assist parents when talking with their children about what they should do when they are approached by an unfamiliar person:

1. Teach your child(ren) your address and phone number, including the area code. Instruct your child(ren) on how to use the telephone to call home, and in an emergency, 911.
2. Keep an updated file on your child, including a photograph and physical description. If your child is under two years of age, you should update the information at least four times each year.
3. Pay close attention to the clothing your child is wearing each day and never display your child's name on his/or clothes or books. Children will often respond to strangers who call them by name.
4. Make sure your child knows what to do should you become separated in a public place. Your child should immediately make a report to a facility employee and should not attempt to search for you.
5. Select a secret code word that only you and your child know. Tell your child never to go with anyone who does not know this code.
6. Keep a set of your child's footprints, fingerprints and dental records.
7. Leave instructions with your child's school to notify you immediately if he/she is absent and provide them with written information on which people are authorized to pick your child up after school.
8. Educate your children on the many tactics used by abductors to lure them away. Teach them to immediately leave the area if a stranger is present. If your child is grabbed, instruct your child to yell "fire" (or "stranger") People are more likely to respond to those shouts than to cries of "help."
9. Survey the recreation and school routes your child uses. Point out any dangerous areas such as vacant lots, alleyways, busy streets, etc. Teach your child what to do should he/she be followed.
10. Join or organize a "safe home" program with your neighbors to establish secure homes where your children can go for help.

Surveillance Camera Catches 4 Robbers on Tape

Case against suspect in homicide #28 (2008) falls apart

Lora Pabst of the Star Tribune has this update to the murder of Augsburg College Student Ahmed Nur Ali. Witnesses who had reluctantly come forward in the first place, recanted their their statements or blew town. The suspect, who will be released, could be recharged at some later time. The case remains open but it seems unlikely that there will be forward movement. As Pabst notes, there were a rash of killings in the Somali community in 2008. Police went to great lengths to get cooperation from potential witnesses. In this case, it appears to have all come to naught.

4th Precinct Weekly Highlights

The weekly report assembled by the staff of North Minneapolis' 4th precinct, MPD.

The first entry is a trainwreck of epic proportion that must have happened only a couple of blocks from the 4th precinct building. Concealed carry in your bra sounds uncomfortable.
