Northeast Citizen Patrol Update: 11-1-2010
It's been some time since my last NECP email to you, and now that we are at the end of our 6th patrol season I expect a year-end note is in order.
I first want to remind all of you that we are now using the Eastside Defender website for our crime alerts and commentary. http://www.eastsidedefender.com/ I encourage all of you to visit it regularly and also register if you would like to post comments and such.
And I also want to mention again to send me your crime alerts to post on the site to help warn others in NE. I just posted one Friday about a theft from a yard...mine, which resulted in me using the online police reporting system. Remember, if you don't report a crime that's happened, as far as the city is concerned, it never happened. So please make reports anytime you are a victim. Here's the link: http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/police/e-report/
For those of you that use facebook on a regular basis, I just created a facebook page for the NECP. You can find it here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Northeast-Citizen-Patrol-NECP/162251587140932 Not much there yet, but I want to create as many opportunities/channels as possible for NE residents to empower themselves in the fight against crime.
Thankfully we've had a pretty good year on the Eastside as far as violent crime goes. However, we are still plagued with lower-level livability crimes, and we all must keep up a vigilant fight because as soon as we let our guard down criminals will take advantage of it.
This year marks the end of Gabby's bar, so that's a big win for the residents of the area, and I want to thank all the people that put in continual effort to help resolve that problem. It is my hope that the new Psycho Suzie's soon to open there will be a well run operation. From all the work going on there I expect a great new place.
This year also marks the teardown of another problem property in NE, a 4-plex at 2744 Taylor St. NE. This is the third problem property the NECP worked on to get torn down. Some of our volunteers also worked very hard on the redevelopment of the corner of Lowery and Polk, that resulted in the tear down of 6 houses and the building of a 30 unit building called Audubon Crossing
The Lowery Bridge will be opening in 2012, so we need to be on the lookout for a crime spike again at that time. For those of you new to the area, the last time the bridge closed down crime went down, and went back up again when the bridge reopened.
2nd Precinct CPS Carol Oosterhuis has retired and for now CPS Nick Juarez will be taking her place. Contact him at 612-673-2797 nicholas.juarez@ci.minneapolis.mn.us if you have any neighborhood criminal/crime concerns or questions for the 2nd Precinct.
Also, don't forget to contact your city council person with persistent problems.

I want to say a special thanks to all those NECP volunteers patrolling in NE, especially for those groups in Audubon, Columbia Park and Sheridan that have been so consistently active.
2011 will be our 7th season and I would like to make a request to those of you that appreciate our efforts to drop a donation in the mail to help keep the NECP in operation. Each month we have to pay phone, rent and web fees. We also have other expenses like printing and postage. Any amount helps, so please contribute if you can. Checks should be made to NECP and mailed to, NECP, PO Box 18619, Minneapolis, MN 55418
If you are part of a NE neighborhood association, I ask that you make a motion to the board to make a donation to the NECP on behalf of the entire neighborhood.
Thank you, and have a great holiday season.
